Pokémon Go: The Quick Trainer Guide

pokemon go

Pokémon Go was officially released July 6th, 2016 and has since literally taken over the world. The game uses the trainers GPS location and camera of the device to allow players to capture, train and battle their Pokémon. For those trainers who are just getting started or are looking for tips and tricks on how to level up quicker and catch more Pokémon, this is your quick guide.

1. Gotta Catch 'Em All!
Drowzee Pokémon GoPsyduck escaped Pokémon Go

Those rustling leaves you see on your screen are not just for show, they indicate a wild Pokémon. Traveling to the rustling leaves will increase your chance at catching new Pokémon. Try different areas in your city as well they will most likely house different kind of Pokémon.

Catching these little buggers can sometimes get frustrating. Pokémon running off, blocking your Poké Balls or escaping you are all common things when your trying to bag higher level Pokémon. Using these tips will help ensure that you don't go through your entire Poké Ball cache or loose your mind.

When you clink on a Pokémon you want to capture a target ring will appear around it. The ring’s color indicates how difficult the Pokémon is to capture. A green ring indicates the capture is low difficulty, orange indicates intermediate difficulty, and red indicates extreme difficulty.

Your best chance at catching Pokémon is when the colored ring is at its smallest diameter.
Pro Tip: Drag and rapidly spin the Poké Ball in a circular motion before you release it for a chance to receive a curveball bonus.

Larger ring = Nice Throw (10xp)
Medium ring = Great Throw (50xp)
Smallest ring = Excellent Throw (100xp)
Curve ball = 10xp

2. Getting Your Pokémon Battle Ready

Training and evolving your Pokémon is what this game is all about. When you have several of one type of Pokémon it is key that the trainer is smart about which Pokémon to evolve and which one gets sent down the river to the Professor is an important decision.

As tempting as it is try not to level up Pokémon, you will more than likely find a higher level one sooner rather than later. You want to try and collect the same type of Pokémon until you have enough candies to evolve the one with the highest level.

To obtain more candies you want to transfer your duplicate Pokémon to Professor Oak. Once this is done that Pokémon is gone forever, so ensure you are transferring a duplicate Pokémon that has low CP and a move set that does not suit your needs.

3. Pokéstop Pokéstop Pokéstop!

Pokéstops will be your go to place in Pokémon Go. Pokémon Go uses different landmarks in your city to create Pokéstops and Pokémon Gyms. These stops can range from an historical monument to a simple convenience store.

The Pokéstops will appear as cubes until you get into the vicinity of the stop. Once in the area the stop will turn into a circle, spinning the circle will release all sorts of goodies from Poké Balls, Lure Modules, Incense and Great Balls among other things. Using Pokéstops will also help you avoid spending money in the shop which can add up quickly if you are putting a lot of play time in.

Pokéstops are also a great place to farm Pokémon. Placing a Lure Module on a Pokéstop will attract Pokémon from all around for 30 minutes. The best part about this is anybody can catch the Pokémon brought in by your Lure Module or visa vera. Combine this with an Incense to attract Pokémon for yourself and a lucky egg to gain Double XP for 30 minutes you will be moving through the ranks quickly.

4. Choosing A Team

Once you have reached a trainer level of 5 you are finally able to challenge a gym. But before you do that you will be asked to pick a team. Choose wisely the fued is real between the three teams in Pokémon Go.

Team Instinct are led by Spark, their mascot is Zapdos:
Pokémon are creatures with excellent intuition. I bet the secret to their intuition is related to how they're hatched. Come and join my team. You never lose when you trust your instinct!
Team Mystic are led by Blanche, Their mascot is Articuno:
The wisdom of Pokémon is immeasurably deep. I'm researching why it is that they evolve. My team? With our calm analysis of every situation, we can't lose!
Team Valor are led by Candela, their mascot is Moltres:
Pokémon are stronger than humans, and they're warmhearted, too! I'm researching ways to enhance Pokémon's natural power in the pursuit of true strength. There's no doubt that the Pokémon our team have trained are the strongest in battle!
5. Taking on a Gym
Pokémon Gym Pokémon Go Team InstinctEvee Hypno Gym Battle Pokémon Go
Like Pokéstops, Gyms are also located at landmarks throughout your city. For now this is the only form of Pokémon battle in the game. It is also not a traditional Pokémon battle were you can choose your moves, the battle is fought by tapping and swiping to attack and dodge. This is why it is important to make sure your Pokémon has a good move set before you upgrade or evolve them.

To attack while in a battle you tap on your screen for a normal move and press and hold to build your special attack. You dodge by swiping left or right on the screen to try and avoid incoming attacks. I recommend you try 2-3 attacks and then swipe to dodge incoming attacks then repeat.

After each victory you will begin to bring down the gyms prestige points. After the gyms prestige points have been depleted you can now claim the gym for your team.

Quick Tricks!

Pikachu I Choose You!
Pikachu Pokémon Go Pikachu Pokémon Go

There is a trick in the very beginning of the game that allows you to choose Pikachu as your initial Pokémon, instead of the normal starters which include Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Charmander.

To do this you must walk away from the original starting Pokémon 4-5 times. The original 3 will keep respawn once off screen and on the 4th or 5th time a Pikachu will spawn with them allowing you to catch him.

Choose Your Evee Evolution!
Evee Pokémon Go Vaporeon Pokémon Go

Traditionaly Evee will evolve into one of three Pokémon types which are Flareon, Jolteon or Vaporeon. This evoluion is usually based on special items used or Evee's moves or mood. This trick allows you to choose which evolution Evee takes by renaming it one of the following ways before evolution:

Rename as Rainer to evolve into water type Vaporeon
Rename as Sparky to evolve into lightning type Jolteon
Rename as Pyro to evolve into fire type Flareon

Well my fellow Pokémon trainers I believe that is a wrap for this quick guide. I hope that I was able to help some of you new trainers in some way. I got to go for now (Gotta Catch 'Em All)! #TEAMINSTINCT
