As a kid in the late 90s, Bug Juice was probably my first experience with reality television. Long before reality shows took over TV, Disney Channel gave us a glimpse into life at summer camp with a series that felt surprisingly real.
1998 Disney Bug Juice
Bug Juice premiered on Disney Channel in 1998 and followed a group of kids spending their summer at Camp Waziyatah in Maine. The cameras captured everything from friendships and crushes to homesickness and camp competitions. Unlike most shows aimed at kids, there were no scripts, no actors, and no laugh tracks—just real kids having real experiences.

MEMORY UNLOCKED

I remember staying up late to watch Bug Juice on Disney Channel. Since I never got the chance to go to summer camp, Watching Bug Juice at Camp Waziyatah felt like my summer camp.

If you’ve never been to summer camp, you might be wondering where the show’s name came from. “Bug juice” is a camp slang term for a super-sweet drink made from powdered mixes that’s often served at summer camps.

The first season at Camp Waziyatah was always my favorite. I remember staying up late to watch new episodes on Disney Channel whenever they aired. Since I never got the chance to attend summer camp myself, following the adventures of the campers was about as close as I could get. Week after week, I found myself invested in the friendships, rivalries, and everyday camp experiences.

ORIGINAL INTRO THEME

Today, Bug Juice is mostly forgotten, but for many Disney Channel fans, it remains a nostalgic time capsule of the late 90s. The good news is that thanks to the internet, the series hasn’t disappeared completely. Many of the episodes can now be found on YouTube, making it easy to revisit Camp Waziyatah and relive a piece of Disney Channel history.

If you remember watching Bug Juice, I’d love to hear about it. Did you ever attend summer camp, or were you like me and lived vicariously through the campers on TV?
