Once again its time to take a trip back to the 90's, my favorite decade growing up. The 90's gave way to hundreds of cartoon series and many of these series had a line of toys to aid in promotion. Some companies even used foods like cereals and snacks to help promote, but that's for another post. Below is a list of my top 5 favorite toys.
Batman Forever
This toyline was based on the Batman Forever movie and was created by Kenner in 1995. These figures weren't my first experience with batman toys but they were my favorite, maybe because I could relate them to the movie and I was now old enough to really understand it. My favorite sets from that toy line were the Wayne Manor Batcave Compound and the Triple Action Vehicle set.
Biker Mice From Mars
Biker Mice From Mars was a toyline based off the cartoon show of the same name. The line was created by Galoob a toy company best known for creating Micro Machines. The thing that drew my brother and I to the show and these toys were their wicked awesome motorcycles; each mouse had one and each one was unique. Our favorite characters were Throttle and Vinnie because they had the most bad ass motorcycles any mouse have ever ridden.
Street Sharks
Time for Street Sharks, the toys that bite back! This toyline was created by Mattel and later had the cartoon series created to help promote the toys. These were introduce in 1994 just as the Ninja Turtle were on their way out. These toys were really detailed and even had veins popping out from their muscles. The packaging for the Street Sharks was genius, it alone helped solve the to purchase or not to purchase debate if you were on the fence. My brother and I had all four of the brothers Jab, Streex, Slammu, Ripster. We spent countless hours swiming through the pool chomping away the bad guys.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
I know its crazy these aren't my number 1, especially since i had an enormous amount of Ninja Turtles as a kid. I remember my 4th or 5th birthday being all about Ninja Turtles. I got some of my favorite toys that day, including the Party Wagon, Donatello frisbee a bunch of figures and a Donatello costume. There is a home video of this birthday somewhere ill try to find it and post it another day. Though I had many Ninja Turtle action figures there was always one toy that eluded me and a friend of mine would flaunt his Ninja Turtles Sewer Play set every time I came over to play. This was the crowning jewel for any kids ninja turtle collection, if you had this you had made it, sadly I never did.
Sgt. Savage and his Screaming Eagles (G.I. Joe)
This line of G.I. Joes became available in 1994. If you haven't heard of them its because they were a short-lived line of G.I. Joe by Hasbro. The first figure I received included a VHS tape of Sgt. Savage and his Screaming Eagles. It was a single 30 minute cartoon produced by Sunbow and animated by AKOM. It was designed to promote the short-lived Sgt. Savage toyline, you can watch the cartoon on YouTube here. I was able to get most of the toys including the vehicles as a kid including the I.R.O.N Panter, Grizzly SS-1 and the P-40 Warhawk. This led to some awesome battles against my brother in the dirt and mud of the flower beds (forest) at our house.
That ends another look back into my childhood. My final choice of toy may not be the most popular in the world, but it has the most memories attached to it out of the list. At the end of the day that is all that matters. Thanks again for reading and check back for more entries!
